How Offsetting Works
The offsetting process
The offsetting process works as follows:
- You calculate your emissions and identify opportunities to reduce.
- You take the necessary actions to reduce, and to continue to assess your emissions and factor them into your ongoing operations and capital investment plans.
- You calculate the amount of the emissions that are impractical or which cannot be further reduced.
- You select emission reductions from our portfolio of projects that provide valuable social, economic and environmental benefits to the communities that host them. Each project has been monitored and verified by an independent third party so that you can be assured you are retiring real, quality reductions. We can provide as much project information as you like.
- You tell us how much from each project you want us to retire on your behalf.
- Upon payment, we retire the emission reductions, making them unavailable for any future use. If some of the offsets from the project you have chosen are yet to be generated, we retire them promptly upon delivery.
We provide you with retirement certification. Kyoto instruments are retired in the UK government registry. Verified emission reductions will be retired in the Voluntary Carbon Standard registry when it becomes operational.
